I’m mainly based at Cubic’s European headquarters, AFC house - although, as my VP role evolves, I will do my best to
divide my time more equally between the UK and San Diego. My UK-based team of 28 people spans three core functions -
planning, project accounting and financial reporting.
Matt Cole - VP of Financial Operations
Up till October 2008, I was Cubic’s Head of Finance, Europe – but I’ve recently been promoted to VP of
Financial Operations. As a result, I’ve been incredibly busy, expanding on the internal, customer, supplier and
partner relationships I already have - but in the context of my new role.
It’s a global role, in which I’m part of the senior management team. Together with eight colleagues, I run the
business around the globe – which obviously means working on a wider geographical scale.
Enhancing the relationships I already have will be essential – as will forging new ones in San Diego and beyond. In
my experience, you get the best results when you build relationships in person, as well as over the phone and online.
The transportation industry is exceptionally exciting to work in. I experience it at first hand, as a passenger - then
I get to evaluate that experience and apply it to our business strategies. I’m fascinated by all the logistical,
organisational and mechanical elements that keep the industry and its passengers moving.
It’s particularly exciting working for Cubic, as it has a great attitude towards ‘fresh blood.’ If someone’s young
and ambitious, senior and longstanding members of its management team openly welcome and consider new ideas.
Just because Cubic is a well-established and successful organisation, it doesn’t disregard input from younger and
less experienced people. In a way, I’m probably living proof of the way it applies lateral thinking and nurturing
encouragement to those fairly new to its industry.
