Victory at Waterloo: Cubic to work on Europe’s longest
gate line in July 2008
Waterloo is the second busiest station in the UK’s transport network, with 19 platforms. From July to December this
year, we’ll be installing 128 gates on its main station concourse - and a further 25 in its “peak hour” subway.
These will be a combination of E2 and Wide Aisle Gate (WAGs) for use by passengers with varying needs. We’ll also
be installing newly-designed vehicle equipment gates, which will ensure that any platform service vehicles will have
safe and proper access.
All the works will have to be completed at night, within a limited timeframe, because Waterloo, as a main commuter
route, has to remain fully functioning during normal operating hours.
Gate installation
Following this demanding installation schedule, Waterloo will ultimately be the biggest gated station anywhere in
the world. But Cubic is confident of a successful outcome. In the last three years, we’ve installed gates in over 40
Network Rail stations – and they’ve all been delivered on time.
Contractually, Cubic will ensure that all gates at Waterloo are ITSO-capable by the end of this year. We’ve already
brought multi-modal ticketing to much of London through Oyster, and this is a further step in that same direction, as
we work to integrate ITSO cards seamlessly into the London infrastructure.
